Examples with preverb át

See the previous post about preverbs.

I think be- and ki- are pretty straightforward, but át- can be confusing.

Examples with ÁT:

át- usually means moving from one place to another. So both the start and the endpoint are important, or the place you go through is important. It can have more abstract meanings too.

Átmegyek a nappaliból a konyhába. I go from the living room to the kitchen.

Átmegyek a szomszédba. I go over to the neighbor's place.

Átül az egyik autóból a másikba. She "sits over" from one car to another. She changes cars and sits in another car.

Átszállok egy másik buszra. I change buses.

A gyors barna róka átugrik a lusta kutya fölött. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

Or, if it is not strictly about moving, át can mean changing from some state to another.

Átváltok 10000 forintot euróra. I change 10000 Forints to Euros.
Átöltözöm. I change clothes.
Az energia nem vész el, csak átalakul. Energy does not perish, it merely changes forms.
(átalakul - to transform)

"átmegyek az utcán" - I cross the street
"átmegyek hozzád" - I go over to your place
"átmegyek a másik szobába" - I go over to the other room
"átúszom a híd alatt" - I swim across under the bridge
"átrepülök a város fölött" - I fly across the city
"átmegyek a hátad mögött" - I go across behind your back
"áthozlak erre az oldalra" - I bring you across to this side
"átadom a könyvet" - I hand over the book
"átveszem tőled a pénzt" - I take over the money from you
etc.

"átértékelem a helyzetet" - I reassess the situation
"átmulatom az éjszakát" - I party through the night
"átaludtam az utat" - I slept through the trip

Note that át often comes with the -on-en-ön (superessive) case

"átmegyek az utcán" - I cross the street
"átmegyek a parkon" - I go across the park
"átmegyek a téren" - I go across the square
"átnézek az ablakon" - I look through the window
Miért ment át a csirke az úton? - Why did the chicken cross the road?

The part that you go through receives the -on-en-ön ending.
